With figurative woodcut title border and 131 wodcuts in the text by Tobias Stimmer (some rep.) as well as woodcut printer's device at the end. Strasbourg, Th. Rihel 1574. Contemp. pigskin om 5 bands over wooden boards with rich blind- and roll-tooling (allegories Lucretia, Justitia and Prudentia). Folio. 14 unnumb. ll., 887 pp., 12 unnumb. ll. (last blank)VD 16, L 2117. - BM STC German Books S. 511. - Goedeke II, 320, 8. - Muller III, 545, 48. - Not in Adams. - First edition illustrated by Stimmer . - The richly tooled binding signed "I M - 1557" by an unknown binder. The lavish roll-tooling mentioned by Haebler I, 291, 1. A typed and signed letter by the well-known binding expert Ernst Kyriss, dated 6 January 1957 attached, in which he refers to the roll-tooling. - Some foxing and water staining, mostly in the margins, title soiled and with old ownership inscription, first 5 and last 6 leaves remargined at side. Binding rubbed and stained in places, corner slightly bumped, clasps removed.
