Contemp. wooden boards from the workshop of the Augsburg book binder Jörg Schapf : Calf over slanted wooden boards on three bands with two pigskin clasps with brass fittings, front board with frame of slat iron lines, outer panels with speech scroll Mary stamps, center panel with tendrils and foliage with bud (Kyriss 63, stamps 1, 2 and 3). First released 1474 by Mathias Moravus in Genoa. Main work of the Naples philologist Junianus Maius (or Maggio), an extensive glossary of Latin words and phrases. Besides ancient authors, the work also comprises contemporaries such as Laurentius Valla and Johannes Tortellius. It is considered main source for Calepino's famous Dictionarium latinum (1502). At the same time first of just two prints from the printshop of Bernhard von Köln . - Slightly foxed in places, with slight water stain in lower corner towards end; pastedowns using an early print (Goff D 414), mounted at a later point, first and last 2 ll. with small trace of worming in white margin. Joints and spine ends skillfully restored. All in all splendid and well-preserved broad-margined copy in a very fine late Gothic binding with wooden boards. From the collection Detlef Mauss.
