Seltener erster Druck der ersten Ausgabe von Darwins berühmten Werk über die Abstammung des Menschen und die sexuelle Selektion. Erstmals verwendet Darwin hier den Begriff Evolution.

Die Abhandlung bildet eine Art Fortsetzung zu seinem Hauptwerk über den Ursprung der Arten und enthält reichhaltiges neues Beweismaterial zur Evolutionstheorie. "This is really two works. The first demolished the theory that the universe was created for Man, while in the second Darwin presented a mass of evidece in support to his earlier hypothesis regarding sexual selections" (Garrison/M.). - "The word 'evolution' occurs, for the first time in any of Darwin's works, on page 2 of the first volume of the first edition, that is to say before its appearance in the sixth edition of The origin of species in the following year" (Freeman S. 129). - Erster Druck der ersten Ausgabe mit den bei Freeman genannten Merkmalen.

First edition, first issue. Well-preserved copy of this famous work, in which occurs, for the first time in any of Darwin's works, the word "evolution". 2 vols. With 76 wood engravings in text. Green orig. cloth with gilt spine. - Lacking 4 pp. publisher's advertisments at end of the first volume, else complete. - 1 leaf with slight creases, 1 leaf with small tear at upper gutter, some foxing to endpapers and advertisements, front flying endpaper of vol. 1 with small marginal defective spot. Bindings partly with minor rubbing. Provenance: Titles with erased inscription (hardly visible), rear endpaper with old bookseller's stamp.
