Das einzige bekannte Werk des aus Karthago stammenden römischen Schriftstellers und Dichters Martianus Capella (5. oder frühes 6. Jahrhundert). Von großem Einfluß auf das abendländische Bildungswesen im Mittelalter.
"This work .. forms a kind of encyclopedia of the arts and sciences as known for about a thousand years. It was highly esteemed in the Middle Ages as a textbook. The seventh book is on the Greek theory of arithmetic. It treats of the various classes of numbers, such as plane and solid, and mentions the supposed mysteries of the smaller numbers" (Smith). - Breitrandiger Antiqua-Druck mit griechischen Einsprengseln.

Type. 37 Zeilen. - ZUSTAND: In den breiten Rändern tls. leicht fleckig, vereinz. gebräunt, im Kopfsteg gegen Ende mit schwachem Wasserand. Einbd. etw. fleckig und mit einzelnen Schabspuren.

First edition of this famous work, a cornerstone of platonism and the hermetical philosophy and widely used in the Middle Ages. Containing an encyclopedia of the seven liberal arts, among them arithmetic and astronomy. With woodcut printer's device at end. 19th cent. half vellum. 124 nn. leaves. - Partly some staining (mostly in the wide margins), here and there browned, faint waterstain at head towards end. Binding somewhat stained and with few scratches.(R)
