Jan Cornelius Sylvius. Radierung. In der Platte links signiert und datiert. 1633. Auf dünnem Chinapapier. Auf die Plattenkante geschnitten. 16,6 : 14,1 cm.
Schöner kräftiger Druck auf dünnem Chinapapier, das von Rembrandt gerne für besondere Drucke verwendet wurde.
Der Prediger Jan Cornelis Sylvius (1564-1638) war der Ehemann von Saskias älterer Cousine Aeltje Uylenburgh und fungierte kurzzeitig als Saskias Vormund, bis die Patriziertochter 1634 den im Amsterdamer Atelier von Hendrick van Uylenburgh arbeitenden Rembrandt heiratete. Rembrandt porträtierte ihn hier knapp ein Jahr vor seiner Hochzeit mit Saskia.
Die vorliegende Radierung wurde auf dünnem Chinapapier gedruckt. "Perhaps even more remarkable than Rembrandt's use of oatmeal paper was the oriental paper on which he choose to print impressions regularly from now on (around 1642). It had an extremly regular, almost silk-like texture, and was generally yellower and brighter than western paper, although the shades could vary quite widely from ivory to a deep yellowish brown .. A thinner, pale yellow variant is generally reffered to today as 'Chinese' paper .. Impressions on oriental paper can rightly be regarded as a 'de-luxe edition'." - ZUSTAND: Aufgrund der Papierdünne mit mehreren kl. Randläsuren und ca 8. kl. Einrissen (tls. dünn hinterlegt und bis in die Darstellung reichend - sämtlich kaum sichtbar), in der rechten unteren Ecke mit minim. durchschlagender Klebespur verso. Verso am Oberrand an 2 Stellen montiert.

Beautiful strong print on thin China paper, which Rembrandt liked to use for special prints. Etching. Signed and dated in the plate on the left. 1633. Cut to platemark. 16.6 : 14.1 cm. - Due to the thinness of the paper with several small marginal defects and approx. 8 small tears (partly thinly backed and reaching into the image - all of them barely visible), verso in the lower right corner with minimal trace of glue (nearly not shining through). Mounted in 2 places on the reverse of the upper edge.
