Contextual Art

The term "context" is used synonymously with "correlation" or "surroundings". Every process, every object and also every abstract concept can be integrated into a context that will exert direct influence on the meaning.
In this context, Contextual Art examines the questions regarding the conditions for the creation of art. These questions revolve around the entire system of art or often refer to the art work's space and thus concrete localization. Space is understood as a place in which art happens, to which it can directly show a reaction and with which it deals. Questions as to how space can work as a frame for art come up. On another level, the context is examined as to how the art work's present situation, or other social circumstances, influence the process of artistic creation.
Among those artists that can be assigned to Contextual Art are Fareed Armaly, Cosima von Bonin, Daniel Buren, Andrea Fraser, Renée Green, Louise Lawler, Adrian Piper, Gerwald Rockenschaub and Heimo Zobernig.
