Berlin, 24 January, 2013 (kk) – The works that earned Mark Tobey international recognition, and that is not only at the Venice Biennale and the Kassel documenta, are both vibrating and meditative. In the exhibition "Mark Tobey – Graphic Works" Ketterer Kunst shows some 30 high-quality sheets by the far-traveled artist in Berlin.
Mark Tobey's artistic creation is uncompromising. He said "I paint the way I live and feel. (…) Just drawing a picture or living through the process, that are two completely different things".* This absolute and all-encompassing commitment as well as impressions he gained in America, in Europe and, first and foremost, in Asia are reflected by his work. The discoverer led the life of a philosopher; music and meditation were his prime sources of inspiration. What is so impressive about him and his oeuvre likewise is "the presence he emanates, the clear eyes that are capable of seeing dreamworlds, his artistic ability of opening these worlds for us", said François Lafranca about his artist colleague*.
Even if Mark Tobey did not succeed in "writing his name into the moonlight"*, as it was his wish, the precursor of American Abstract Expressionism, who died in Basle in 1976, left behind an particularly impressive oeuvre of graphic works.
