Auction Old Masters & Art of the 19th Century
For those who know longing...
Achenbach
Oswald Achenbach
Der Petersplatz bei Vollmond
Oil on canvas, around 1880, 78 x 100 cm (30.7 x 39.3 in)
Estimate: € 40.000-50.000, (US$ 45.000-56.000)
Munich, 19. October 2015, (kk) - Ingenious effects are his specialty - particularly when it comes to night-time scenes. On November 20 a superb masterpiece with a moonshine motif by Oswald Achenbach will be called up in the Auction of Old Masters & Art of the 19th Century at Ketterer Kunst in Munich.

The work "Landschaft mit Pilger" (estimate € 24,000-28,000) from 1813 also emanates the poetic spirit of Romanticism in the section of Art of the 19th Century. The catalog of the Karl Friedrich Schinkel exhibition in Berlin in 1981 still mentioned it as an authentic work by the artist. However, meanwhile research has shown that the idyllic work with an air of longing was made by a not less gifted artist instead. The estimate is at € 24,000-28,000.

The atmosphere of two oil paintings by Josef von Brandt is far less contemplative. Both his poised "Standartenreiter auf dem Schlachtfeld" as well as the "Dahinjagende Fuhrwerke" (estimates: € 30,000-40,000 each) take the observer right into the events. Despite their relatively small formats, the artist succeeds in reviving the scenes through their immanent dynamic and the spatial depth.

Several paintings by Alexander Koester also breathe the air of 19th century art. In late-impressionist virtuosity he renders the play of light and shade on the plumage of a number of ducks. The five works carry estimates between € 4,000 and € 30,000.

Further highlights in the range of offering from this period are Franz von Stuck's oil on canvas "Neckerei" (estimate: € 50,000-70,000) from 1889, his bronze "Amazone" (estimate: € 12,000-15,000) and Eduard von Grützner's "Falstaff" (estimate: € 12,000-15,000), as well as works by acclaimed artists such as Paul Baum, Carl Dahl, Franz von Defregger, Maurice Denis, Karl Hagemeister, Friedrich Voltz, Alfred von Wierusz-Kowalski, and Heinrich von Zügel.

Jan Victor
Juda gibt Tamar seinen Ring
Oil on canvas, around 1650, 123 x 131.5 cm
Estimate: € 60.000-80.000
The section of Old Masters is led by Jan Asselijn's oil painting "Schlacht bei Lützen 1632 mit König Gustav Adolf von Schweden" from 1635, which could find a new owner for an estimate of € 50,000-70,000, as well as Jan Victors' scene from the Old Testament "Juda gibt Tamar seinen Ring" (estimate: € 60,000-80,000), which is particularly captivating for its virtuous suggestion of materiality.

Other highlights from the range of offerings in this section are the large-size work "Der Maskenball (il Ridotto)" (estimate: € 35,000-45,000) by Joseph Heintz the Younger from around the middle of the 17th century and two counterpart portraits by Johann Heinrich Tischbein the Elder (estimate: € 20,000-30,000), as well as select hand drawings and original graphic works.

Next to Albrecht Dürers woodcut "Die Marter der Zehntausend" (estimate: € 8,000-10,000) a feather drawing and a watercolor by Christoph Heinrich Kniep (estimates: € 3,000-4,000 each), as well as Bernardo Bellotto's (called Canaletto) etching "Vue interieur des pavillons et des galleries du Zwinger..." (estimate: € 5,000-7,000) the buyer's wish list will also include works from acclaimed artists such as Jacob Philipp Hackert, Frans van Mieris the Elder, Giovanni Battista Piranesi and, naturally Harmensz.Rembrandt van Rijn.
