"Johann Friedrich Voltz received first artistic inspiration from his father Johann Michael Voltz. He continued his studies at the Munich Academy as of 1834, however, he remained largely self-taught. The horse painter Albrecht Adam had influence on the young artist as of 1835. Up into the forties […] Voltz followed his pictures of horses and mountain pastures. From 1843 to 1846 he went on several study trips, for instance to Holland, where he met the animal painters around Barend Cornelis Koekkoek. They would have decisive influence on him. Since the fifties […] Voltz found inspiration with his painter friends Carl Spitzweg and Eduard Schleich the Elder. In 1871 he and Schleich visited Italy. In close cooperation with him Voltz made some paintings. At a later point he began to put less emphasis on the anecdote character in his works and rendered depictions of the state of things instead. He almost exclusively painted landscapes with animal staffage from the region around the Starnberg Lake." (Horst Ludwig, in: Münchner Maler im 19. Jahrhundert, Munich 1983, 4th volume, pp. 300ff.).
