Nude bathers in nature are one of the major themes in Otto Mueller's oeuvre, which the artist repeatedly revisited even after the "Brücke" had disbanded. The color lithograph "Fünf gelbe Akte am Wasser" was created in 1921, when Mueller took a break from teaching at the Breslau Academy, which he had been doing since 1919, to visit Schleswig-Holstein. Our work may have been inspired by a stay on the island of Föhr in 1920. In a composition of yellow bodies, the modulated blue water, white beach, and black contours, Otto Mueller allows the bodies of the young girls to act cheerful and lively. The vibrancy of this scene is reminiscent of the works that Heckel, Kirchner, and Pechstein created on the Moritzburg Ponds around a decade earlier, a time that Otto Mueller remembers here in a delightfully offensive eroticism.
