Lago Maggiore. Ca. 1930.
Woodcut.
Rathenau 32. Signed. From an edition of 175 copies. On fine laid paper. 39.3 x 49.7 cm (15.4 x 19.5 in). Sheet: 42,7 x 55,6 cm (16,8 x 21,9 in).
Printed and published as annual bonus by the Karl-Hofer-Society, Berlin, in 1960. Karl Schmidt-Rottluff said the following on the origin of this woodcut: "The woodcut was made around 1930, initially intended as color woodcut, which, for reasons I can't recall, didn't happen. As the printing block was luckily preserved, and the Hofer Society asked me whether I would and so on and so forth, I had it printed and was quite happy with the result." (quoted after Rathenau 32). [AM].
PROVENANCE: Private collection Baden-Württemberg.
Good overall impression. Margins with faint isolated handling marks and isolated splits (up to 23 mm). Corners with old mounting remains, bottom left corner with a superficial paper blemish. Image with isolated unobtrusive white stains. [AM]
