Erste Ausgabe. - Mit dem, von Gaertners Sohn Carl Friedrich Gaertner herausgegebenen, späteren Schlußband. J. Banks gewidmet, dessen reichhaltige Sammlung Gaertners Arbeitsgrundlage bildete. "Of very great value, and highly prized" (Jackson). "In the course of this study of some 1050 genera, about fifty of them new, Gaertner called attention to an enormous range of hitherto neglected or unknown characters of fruits and seeds available for generic distinction. His classification was intended solely for carpologival purposes but nevertheless approached as near to a natural classification as any then proposed" (Hunt). - Die Tafeln, meist von J. G. Sturm, zeigen jeweils mehrere Fruchtstände und Samen in liebevollen und detaillierten Studien. - Kollation: 6 Bll., CLXXXII S., 1 Bl., 384 S., 4 Bll.; LII S., 2 Bll. Contemp. calf (slightly differing) with 2 labels and gilt spine. "Of very great value, and highly prized" (Jackson). - Vol. II lacking last 16 pages (however, including complete 'Index Generum'). - With isolated foxing in places (vol. II somewhat stronger affected, plates mostly affected in white margin), 2 plates detached. Bindings rubbed and scuffed (1 spine stronger affected and with partly removed label), with small scratches and traces of worming on boards in places. All in all well-preserved copy of a rare and highly detailed work on seed heads and seeds.
