Mayer (ab 1918 Mayor, 1868-1922) schlug erst die Ingenieurslaufbahn ein, bevor er nach einem naturwissenschaftlichem Studium sich auf Anregung von Alexander Agassiz, Professor in Harvard und Sohn des Naturforschers und -schriftstellers Louis Agassiz, speziell der Meeresbiologie zuwandte. Vorliegendes Werk beschreibt die Quallenarten aller Weltmeere. - Die chromolithographischen Tafeln num. 1-76 einschließlich der bis-Tafel 64A.
