Extrem seltene litauische Bibelausgabe, herausgegeben und mit einem Vorwort versehen von dem preußisch-litauischen Theologen Ludwig Rhesa (1776-1840), dem Wegbereiter von Litauens Kultur im deutschen Sprachraum. Kein Exemplar im JAP und im ABPC, der KVK verzeichnet kaum 10 Exemplare, von denen dasjenige der Staatsbibl. Berlin nicht mehr vorhanden ist (Kriegsverlust). Dem Expl. der Württ. LB fehlt das Vorwort von Rhesa.
Die erste vollständige Bibelausgabe in litauischer Sprache erschien 1735 unter Federführung von Johann Jakob Quandt und basierte im wesentlichen auf Luthers deutscher Bibelübersetzung. 1755 wurde eine zweite, leicht korrigierte Auflage gedruckt. Erst 60 Jahre später erschien die vorliegende dritte Ausgabe.
"In 1806 the dearth of Scriptures in Lithuania was brought to the notice of the British and Foreign Bible Society. No edition had appeared for fifty years; copies were rare and expensive .. and among 7.000 families not a single Bible was to be found. After delays caused by the napoleonic war, a Königsberg committee of clergy, under the lead of L. F. Rhesa was formed to prepare a new edition of the Bible .. The German preface by L. J. Rhesa gives some account of Lithuanian editions of the Scriptures, and describes the method followed in this revision. With Luther's Bible as a basis, the version was carefully revised by comparison with the Hebrew and the Greek, and also with J. Bretken's Ms. version. The introduction (by August Hermann Francke) is borrowed from the German Canstein Bibles" (Darlow/M.).
Vereinz. etw. fleckig, ca. 22 Bll. mit kl. Wurmspur (Buchstabenverlust), Titel mit altem Namensstempel, erste Seite der Vorrede mit alter hs. Anmerkung. Einbd. beschabt, Rücken und Schließen trockenrissig (kl. Fehlstellen). Insges. guterhaltenes Exemplar.

Very rare Lithuanian Bible, the third edition in this language (first publ. 1735). Edited and with preface by L. Rhesa, forerunner of Lithunian culture in the German speaking area and the founder of Lithuanian folklore research. 3 pts. in 1 vol. Contemp. calf over wooden boards with blindpressed panel and 2 clasps. - Here and there some staining, ca. 22 leaves with small wormtrace (loss of letters), title with old ownership stamp, first leaf of preface with contemp. note. Binding rubbed, spine and clasps brittle. In general good copy.
