Signed lower right. 59,5 : 72,3 cm (23,4 : 28,4 in). Karl Stachelscheid studied in the painting and coloured wall design department at the Wuppertal Master School for Design in the Decorative Arts before transferring to the Free Art School for Painting and the Graphic Arts in Düsseldorf in 1934. He remained a student there until 1945. Extended travels took him to Luxemburg, the Tyrol, Italy and the US. Stachelscheid, a versatile master of many methods and modes of expression, experimented stylistically with Cubism, Expressionism, Informel and figurative painting. The constantly changing currents in art during the first half of the 20th century all left their mark on his development. The present painting is figurative art on the threshold of the non-representational. [BR]
