Sandro Chia
1946
Ohne Titel. Um 1988.
Oil, pastel and chalk on paper, mounted on canvas.
Signed in the lower right. 143.3 x 109.5 cm (56.4 x 43.1 in). [KA].
• A dynamic, large-format portrait in vivid, intense colors.
• From the heyday of the Italian Transavanguardia, of which Sandro Chia is a key figure.
• Gestural brushwork and graphic accents lend the composition a powerful presence.
• Works from the 1980s are among the most sought-after in the artist’s oeuvre and fetch the highest prices on the international auction market.
• Chia’s works are held in major museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, and the Tate, London.
PROVENANCE: Galerie Pfefferle, Munich.
Private collection (acquired from the above).
Galerie Terminus, Munich (stamped on the back of the stretcher; since 2000, Sotheby’s, London).
Private collection, Southern Germany (acquired from the above around 2010).
LITERATURE: Sotheby's, London, Contemporary Art Part Two, June 30, 2000, lot 176 (illustrated in color).
In good condition. The edges are slightly darker in places due to the frame and show irregular paper residue on the underlying canvas. The top and right edges of the paper are slightly unevenly trimmed. The condition report was compiled in daylight with the aid of a UV light source, and to the best of our knowledge and belief.
