This little watercolor by Gabriele Münter is a lovely example of her masterly ability to make the full range of her imagination resonate even in small formats. The economical handling of the outline drawing is ennobled by watercolor washes, which lend the work a particularly appealing aesthetic. At a time when Germany was obviously heading for a catastrophe, this little offering must have seemed miraculous. At the same time, it attests eloquently to the painter’s trust that her art would endure. [KD].
