Influenced by Wols, Fautrier and Dubuffet, Hoehme questions the sense of the panel and makes the color the picture’s motif. The color’s energy becomes the prime element in his creation, to which the picture’s format is also subordinate. His so-called ‘Borkenbilder‘ (Bark Pictures ) were made as of 1958, their clod-like color layers taking on organic forms. They call strong reminiscence of the bark of trees, which is the eponym of this series. The relief structure, attained by means of the pastose color application, makes for the object character of this actual panel. The color landscape, which allows more than one perspective, determines the picture’s content and effect. As this work with its potential perspectives shows, the observer should let himself be guided by the energy of the color. [SM].
