The atmospheric and expressive mountain landscape is a great example of Heckel‘s love of landscape themes in the 1920s. In these days after World War I Heckel found artistic reorientation and the watercolors that he mostly made on journeys occupy a more and more predominant position in his work. He makes landscape panoramas in large formats; the expressionist colors of his earlier days are replaced by more subdued ones. Executed with great care, Heckel created a very special atmosphere in his watercolors, one that the observer can hardly withdraw from. [CB].
