Gerhard Richter made this over-painted photograph in late 1999. As usual, the composition is based on a snapshot in the format of a photo-print that is largely covered by abstract structures in oil. The method of a sloped wiping leads to a flamy flickering formation: forms and range of colors create an impression of a blaze. In combination with the motif – a wall of a house, a lawn and an abandoned garden chair – the observer is subliminally set into a state of disconcertment. The reality of a photograph that could come from the life of nearly everyone is taken to another level through the abstract color streaks. With non-representational means Richter creates a new reality that captures the observer emotionally.
