PROVENANCE: Acquired directly from the artist.

Since the late 1980s Imi Knoebel has been entirely focused on the colors' effects. This is also true for the work series "Pure Freude" (Pure Joy) from which our work originates. The series was named after the record label of his wife Carmen. As far as the form is concerned he decided in favor of a fragmented portrait format, the individual parts do not only differ in terms of their colors, additionally the artist uses gaps in order to increase the eigenvalue of the individual color fields. At the same time Knoebel uses the brushstroke to develop the surface's formal structure. Brush and color add carnation as structured surface to the smooth aluminum plate. Accordingly, this work is strongly characterized by Imi Knoebel's style. The occupation with color, color surface and space have always been at the center of the artist's creation.
