The colorful and merry Nana world that Niki de Saint Phalle left behind is characteristic of the unorthodox style of an extrovert artist who has liberated herself from all constrains. The truth is that Saint Phalle used her sculptures to visualize her own fears regarding motherhood, sexualityand interpersonal communication. Especially the emphasis of particularly female parts of the body suggest that the artist acts as someone who tries to defeat own fears. She conjures up an image of women that had never been in line with her self conception, an image she approaches more like a cliché, coined by a male dominated culture and anchored in our consciousness. Saint Phalle‘s bouncy and yet grave femininity is creatural and anti-intellectuall. Only the sculptures‘ bold and gaudy colors reduce the emphasis on physicalness, in order to take it to a more general level of alienation. [SM]
