Kwade's oeuvre is characterized by an incredible spatial presence, aesthetic perfection and the density of its content. The works of the Berlin artist initially fascinate with their pure material aesthetics. Gold, silver, tin, nickel, copper, lead, zinc and aluminum are the metals that Kwade presents to us in the present work "Thursday September 19, 2013, 15:22:00" in eight cubes of different sizes. They all differ in color, shine, feel and weight, each of these metals has its own aesthetic character, which Kwade lines up next to each other in the form of strict cubes and thus relates to one another. In addition, the cubes are placed in a strict hierarchical order by the ascending or descending order of their size. The formal austerity of the cubes is reminiscent of famous sculptural works of American Minimal Art, by Donald Judd or Sol LeWitt, but the graduated size of the cube shape allows associations to the classic children's toy of stacking cubes, which either fit into each other from small to large or can be stacked on top of one another. But Kwade's cubes are anything but hollow, they are solid and thus give us an idea of the weight of the individual metals. Why is the golden cube the smallest and the aluminum one the largest in the series? Does it have anything to do with density? Are all cubes of the same weight? No, reveals the work’s title "Thursday September 19, 2013, 3:22 p.m.", all dice have the same value, so it's more about the artistic representation of a time-bound value and thus the question of the traditional values of our society. "Thursday, September 19, 2013, 3:22 p.m." makes an abstract, flexible relationship of values perceptible: The man-made, fictitious value of an ounce of gold, as it was determined by the stock exchange on September 19, 2013, in relation to the other seven metals, the pondering Rosenthal porcelain figure and thus also indirectly to all other material and immaterial components of our existence. But why is a tiny gold cube worth as much to us as a large aluminum cube, why do we differentiate between metals and precious metals? In her art, Kwade masterfully decodes central norms and conventions of our capitalist society. On closer inspection, her works, which are fascinating alone for their pure material aesthetics, open up a broad abstract intellectual game that revolves around our perception and conception of time, of economic processes and the production of values, of cosmological connections and finally also of the social significance of emotional values and moral norms.
