Liegender. 1935/38.
Bronze with black-brown patina.
Stand with the foundry mark "Guss W. Füssel Berlin" and the inscription "10". From an edition of 6 lifetime casts and 1 artist proof. Ca. 24.5 x 42.5 x 24.5 cm (9.6 x 16.7 x 9.6 in).
Cast by art foundry Füssel, Berlin (with the foundry mark). [JS].

• Lifetime cast.
• Progressive style and radically modern aesthetics.
• Concentration, reduction, sensuality and flawlessness in perfect symbiosis.
• The essence of humanity - Hartung's masterful reinterpretation of the classic motif of the "reclining nude".
• With its gentle organic form, Hartung's "Liegender" provides a brilliant prelude to a series of anthropomorphic sculptures that Hartung described as "vegetative forms".
• Further casts of this bronze can be found in the collection of the Sprengel Museum, Hanover, as well as in the artist's estate.
• Hartung's "Liegender" was on display at documenta I in 1955 and the Venice Biennale in 1956
.

PROVENANCE: Private collection Austria (acquired from the artist's estate in the 1970s).
