Seltene erste Ausgabe von Galileis Einführung in die Astronomie, eines seiner frühesten Werke in Padua, das erst nach seinem Tod veröffentlicht wurde. Die Abhandlung wurde nur durch Studentenabschriften aus den Jahren 1602-1606 von einem verlorengegangenen Manuskript gerettet. Es enthält eine umrissene Darstellung in der Tradition des Ptolemäus für Studenten des ersten Semesters. Ein zweiter Teil behandelt zahlr. astronom. Probleme, die auf Cavalieris Abhandlung für seine Studenten basiert, sowie praktische Abhandlungen zu astronomischer Kartierung. - "The treatise on the Sphere .. is supposed by some authors to be apocryphal, as it teaches the Ptolemaic cosmogony, placing the earth immovable in the center, and adducing the usual arguments. But this does not necessarily make the work apocryphal, for we have it under his own hand that for some years he taught the Ptolemaic system in classes out of compilance with popular feeling, though at heart he was a follower of Copernicus" (Fahie). - Ohne das gest. A scarce work of the first edition of Galileo's 'Treatise on the Sphere', one of his earliest works, unpublished during his lifetime, consisting of a program of instruction in astronomy for university students. With 1 folding engr. plate (astronomical chart) and 2 folding tables (letterpress table of planetary calculations and letterpress astronomical table). New vellum with red label. - Lacking engr. title, 1 doublepage engr. plate and errata leaf at end. - Clean copy of this scarce work.
