Abraham Ortelius

*  1527 Antwerpen
† 1598 Antwerpen

Abraham Ortelius, a Dutch geographer and cartographer, was born in Antwerp on 14 April 1527. Ortelius focused on carthography and published the first world atlas called "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum". This was probably the first collection of maps as one book. Due to its great success at its time, four new editions of the "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum" had to be published in the same year it first appeared. Ortelius was the first cartographer who indicated the names of his map's sources by referring to the concerning cartographer. Abraham Ortelius died in 1598 in Antwerp.
