Hans Uhlmann
Biography
Hans Uhlmann was born on November 27, 1900, in Berlin. Uhlmann turned to sculpture after studying engineering. He was arrested in 1933 for passing out anti-fascist leaflets. This had the effect that his works were deemed "degenerate" and removed from German museums. He remained in custody until 1935. Uhlmann became professor for sculpture at the College of Arts Berlin. In the next years, he produced geometric figures from iron elements, whose constructivistic composition pulls the observer into the piece's "movement." Hans Uhlmann died on October 28, 1975, in Berlin.
