Samuel de Champlain

*  1570 Brouage
† 1635 Quebec

The French colonist and explorer Samuel de Champlain (1570-1635) made his first visit to Canada in 1603, probably assigned by the king as an observer and reporter. Seven more trips followed 1604-1615. During this time Champlain created an exact map of the St. Lawrence River and made detailed travelogues describing his impressions (e.g. Voyages et Decouvertures faites en la Nouvelle France, depuis l'année 1615). He particularly focused his attention on the Hurons and Iroquois, two Indian tribes that had been unknown before.
