From a deep black background Trübner works out the portrait of a grave young girl with dark fringed bangs in vibrant brushstrokes. Dressed in a dark robe that blends in with the background, Trübner put main focus on the girl's pale face. A white frill collar on her dress's squared neckline serves as a sort of frame within the picture. Influence of the Leibl circle with its expressive alla-prima-painting can be observed in Trübner's development as of the 1870s, which went hand in hand with a rejection of academic traditions. According to the Leibl expert Georg Jacob Wolf, Trübner made this work offered here not so much with the intention of creating a portrait but to render a specific type that was very popular with members of the Leibl circle.
