Große Meditation: "Herr! lass mich erglühen". 1937.
Oil on linen-textured paper, originally mounted on cardboard.
Monogrammed in the lower left and dated in the lower right. Inscribed with the artist’s name, as well as “III. 1937” and “N. 21,” on the reverse, presumably by Lisa Kümmel. Also inscribed “Meditation LXII” by Andreas Jawlensky, the artist’s son, and with a typographically titled label on the reverse. 24.8 x 17.7 cm (9.7 x 6.9 in).
Firmly mounted in a frame. [AW/MH].
• A masterful visualization of Jawlensky’s exquisite glazing technique.
• With great empathy, Jawlensky transforms the human face into an icon-like manifestation of religious sentiment.
• Similar works from around 1937 can be found at, among others, the Lenbachhaus in Munich, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Kunstmuseum Basel.
• From the artist’s estate.
