Strandlandschaft vor Scheveningen. Early 1640s.
Oil on canvas, doubled.
100 : 132 cm (39,3 : 51,9 in). Genre and historical scenes are the focuses of Benjamin Gerritsz Cuyp's extensive œuvre. He dedicates his genre paintings to the interiors of farm houses and the life of soldiers, but also to landscapes, beaches and city views. He connects elements from the Haarlem School's representative Jan van Goyen with his very own composition, its great dramatic art being expressed by an increasingly quick stroke of brush. The Scheveningen beach is near The Hague, where the artist settles for some time in the early 1640s. The people's daily routines inspire him to depict the busy scene with a fish market, two horsemen, and the fishermen with their boats at low tide. [AS]
EXPERTISE: With a photo expertise from Mr Walther Bernt, Munich, from 28 July 1960
PROVENIENZ: Private collection South Germany.

A very similar beach landscape with fishermen is in possession of the Galerie Bachstitz in The Hague
Good overall impression. Two small restored splits (?) to upper area of the image. Few small retouchings to margins. Fine retouchings to the groups of figures in the fore- and background. Stretcher slightly pushing through in places of centre.
