When Nesch accompanied Ragnhild on a tour through the Finnmark in 1947 he made a series of drawings that show landscapes and theater scenes, as well as backstage scenes, for instance of the dressing room. He used these impressions for a small series of 35 prints. Later on he worked up important personal motifs, such as the "Theatergarderobe", in large metal prints with splendid colors. The masterly printing method that he had developed himself integrates different materials into the printing process. With its relief-like structure it is unmatched in modernist graphic art and earned Rolf Nesch the reputation of an experimental outsider. Nesch adds an individual color application to the surface structure, either by means of a brush or with his fingers, which can be seen in the studio traces on our work. Through these variations the artist makes each one of his prints a unique piece. With his metal prints Rolf Nesch set out on uncharted waters and reserved the exclusive right to use them for his very own interpretation. [JA]
