"From time to time it drove him [Thoma] back home, looking for the old, for what was still there." The old pine forests, the green meadows, the clear trout streams, the dark blue sky with the beautiful silver clouds, the fresh air, the healthy spring water - even the old farms under their broad shingle roofs, with the rows of windows laughing below them [..] and with mighty maple- and ash trees behind the house. '"(Henry Thode , Thoma, The Master's Painting, Stuttgart and Leipzig, 1909, p. XLIV). In our large-scale work Thoma’s mastery becoms particularly obvious in the light reflections on trees, soil and leaves. The berry pickers harmoniously blend into the section of the landscape dominated by tall trees. Thoma handles the brush with utmost care and renders the forest in all its splendor. The low berry scrub at the edge of thee forest shimmers in shades of yellow, brown and red, while the trees shine in a summery green. With this painting Thoma succeeds in creating a unique work that challenges the viewer to admire the great skills of this artist over and over.
