Neben seiner bedeutenden künstlerischen Tätigkeit beschäftigte sich Jan van der Heyden eben auch mit technischen Problemen wie der Brandbekämpfung oder auch der Einrichtung einer neuen Straßenbeleuchtung in Amsterdam (1669). "Jan v.d. Heide was captain of the Amsterdam fire-brigade and the inventor of moveable hose (leather-hose).
