Neben seiner bedeutenden künstlerischen Tätigkeit beschäftigte sich Jan van der Heyden eben auch mit technischen Problemen wie der Brandbekämpfung oder auch der Einrichtung einer neuen Straßenbeleuchtung in Amsterdam (1669). "Jan v.d. Heide was captain of the Amsterdam fire-brigade and the inventor of moveable hose (leather-hose). The fine, large plates illustrate the extinguishing of all sorts of fires, with the Amsterdam scene as backround, the old and new methods, some noteable great fires ... the last plate illustrates the extinguishing of a fire on board a large ship of the East India Company with a fire-engine and long hoses from a small boat."
