Callot, J., Vita et historia beatae Mariae virgines matris Dei. - Martiryum appostolorum. 2 series in 1 vol. Engr. folding portrait of A. Bosse, 2 engr. titles and 28 copper plates by J. Callot. [Paris, C. Israel Henriet around 1633]. 19th century dark brown smoothed morocco binding (signed "Thibaron-Joly") with ornamental gilt lettering on spine and front board in a 16th century Milanese style, double gilt fillet border and vellum endpapers, in morocco slipcase. 12mo.
Lieure 1357 (II/2), 1358-1370 (II/3) and L. 1386 (II/3), 1387-1401 (II/4). -Schröder II, 1351ff. and 1363ff. - All plates in second state and inscribed "Israel ex(ec)." - Size of etchings 7 : 4,5 cm, with ca. 1 mm margin at top, right and left; lower margin 0,5 cm. - As a follow-up to his important cycle on the Thirty Years War Les misères de la guerre, Callot created several New Testament sequels, among them this Life of the Virgin and the marytrs of the apostles, the so-called "Petits Apotres", in which he delivers proof of his talent not in the depiction of the grotesque and the abysmal, but as a "Little Master" (Schröder). - "La vie de la sainte vierge ... Callot y témoigne des qualités qu'on ne rencontre pas dans toutes ses oeuvres: un sentiment religieux pénétrant ... un goût classiques des plus purs ... C'est un de des plus jolies séries religieuses, admirablement gravée." (Lieure) - "Bei den 'Kleinen Aposteln' rückt, was bei der 'Großen Apostelserie' noch winziger, minutiöser Hintergrund war, unmittelbar ins Zentrum des Geschehens: das Martyrium - nicht weniger drastisch geschildert wie die 'Straftaten' oder die 'Schrecken'." (Schröder) - The portrait inserted at the beginning (24,8 : 14,3 cm: Le Blanc 887) by Bosse by Israel was made around 1635. - Slightly and evenly browned, portrait with small tear in the folding. Joints minimally rubbed, front board with 1 small trace of scraping. - From the collection Georges Danyau (front endpapers with ex-libris and stamp; Lugt 720).
Two miniature series of Callot. Engr. folding portrait (24,8 : 14,3 cm) by A. Bosse and 2 engr. titles and 28 engr. plates (7 : 4,5 cm, margin from 0,1 to 0,5 cm) by J. Callot. All engravings in second state. 19th cent. dark blue morocco (signed "Thibaron-Joly") with rich ornamental gilt decoration on boards, in morocco slipcase. - Evenly slightly browned, portrait with small folding tear. Joints minimally rubbed, a slight scrapemark to front board. - Copy of the Georges Danyau collection (bookplate and stamp on endpapers).
