PROVENANCE: Private collection Berlin.

Ernst Wilhelm Nay left Hofheim in the Taunus in October 1951 and settled in Cologne. In the environment of a big city that is slowly beginning to recover from the war, Nay completed the final steps towards abstract painting. Our work originates from a period when his creation was in transition, the work group of the "Rhythmischen Bilder" [Rhythmic Images] belongs to the so-called "Scheibenbildern" [Disc Images], which belong to the artist’s most renowned works. The work is still dominated by an impetuous rhythmic gestus, which finds expression in individually set color forms accompanied by the meter of black lines and dots. Music as a source of inspiration for Nay becomes obvious right away, it is particularly the works of Strawinsky, Hindemith and Schönberg as well as the music of progressive musicians such as Nono, Boulez and Stockhausen. In the following years the color fields in Nay‘s works format to discs and thus perform a change to planar painting. [SM].
