Gruytrode, J. de, Speculum aureum anime peccatricis. With numerous lombards drawn in red. Paris, Ulrich Gering around 1478/79. Plain cloth around 1900. 4to. 42 unnumb. ll. Roman type, rubricated all the way through, 26-28 lines.

Hain 14904. - GW M 10752. - Goff p. 639. - Pellechet 4309. - Not in BMC and the BSB. - Second edition, very rare. - Early edition of the popular edification book, which was translated into French, German and English and published more than forty times in the 15th century. Erroneously, the work was initially ascribed to Dionysius Carthusiensis, nowadays, however, to Jacobus de Gruytrode or Jacobus de Clusa. - Along with Michael Friburger and Martin Crantz, Ulrich Gering counts among the first three Parisian book printers, all three came from South West Germany (Constance, Colmar and Strasbourg; cf. Geldner II, 190ff.). This work is an outstanding example of his antiqua type. - ISTC registers only 8 copies, of which 4 copies can be found outside of France and just one in the USA (Chicago). - First l. slightly stained, few faint underscores in thin gray brown ink. Fine broad-margined print.

Scarce, early (possibly second) edition of the devotional, that quickly achieved tremendous popularity, appearing in about 40 known editions in the 15th century, including translations into French, German and English. ISTC records only 8 copies (4 outside France, only 1 in the US). - 19th/20th cent. cloth. - First leaf slightly dusty, a few faint underlinings. Clean crisp and unwashed copy with broad margins.
